Shelter in Place: Day 11

Now, I am going to share my thoughts on prison and detention centers.

I hope that more people now than ever will recognize the inhuman experience that is the United States’ system of mass incarceration. Not only is it dehumanizing, immoral, and fundamentally racist, but in the light of the COVID-19 crisis, prisons and detention centers have become high-risk areas for both those inside and outside their walls.

Not everyone is onboard with prison abolition. This will take time, but I hope a sense of self-preservation will motivate people to act now.

Detention centers for migrants offer similar dangers as well as being similarly inherently unjust. In light of this, I have sent a message to California Governor Gavin Newsom urging him to release all detainees from ICE detention centers in California. I never know how much impact (if any) these messages will bring, but I believe in the power of numbers and data. I think if enough people write, then needs will at least be partially addressed. Or that’s what I have to believe in order to continue living in a “democracy”.

At least I feel free to write this.

If anything, this crisis has solidified my belief that the prison system is wrong, and should be demolished. In my own home, over the course of 11 days, I have seen my mental health spiral. And this with only one other person in the apartment, the ability to go for walks, the ability to make my own food, and my dearest cat, Scout. I cannot even begin to imagine being involuntarily incarcerated. The toll that takes on a person’s spirit and mind.

I have never claimed to be all-knowing, but I am trying my hardest to make the world more just for everyone in it. I thank you as always for your support and kindness.

I hope this crisis will allow us to remodel our society in a more equitable manner.

Sending love from California,

LAF
